Tailrace Extension - Mangahao Electric Power Scheme

Description

This photograph shows a 30 metre extension to the concreted section of the tailrace, downstream from the power station. It was extended to stop erosion. A weir has been built in to the tailrace and this allows the water flow to be halted, reducing wear to the bed and to the banks. It was hoped that the new tailrace will allow the water to flow much more quickly during floods so that the station does not have to close down. In the past, floodwaters have risen above the generator outlets so that the turbines could not turn. These improvements were completed by the Ministry of works at a cost of £70,000.The Mangahao Power Station provides hydroelectric power and is situated near the town of Shannon. It serves Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. After being delayed by WWI, construction began in late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924.
