This newspaper image shows John Joseph Pawelka, a man of certain notoriety in the Manawatu, who was tried at the Supreme Court at Palmerston on 25 May 1910 with the murder of John Patrick Hacket Maguire, a police officer, on April 10. He was acquitted of the charge due to insufficient evidence.He was sentenced in 1911 to 21 years in prison for arson and burglary. He made two escapes from prison and five from custody. He was never found
