In July 1933 C.M. Ross celebrated their 50th Jubilee. The company, begun by Charles Ross in 1883, grew into one of the foremost department stores in Palmerston North. The Jubilee celebrations included a month-long sale, a Jubilee concert and a 5 tier cake was cut in an afternoon function at their tearooms on 6 July 1933.
