The Lakelet was constructed in October 1909 and the cannon was placed in the Square gardens in April or May of the same year. The buildings that are visible are DM George's drapery business (left), the Occidental Hotel (middle) and the Bank of New Zealand (right). The top of the observatory can just be made out on the right side of the frame, behind the cannon.
