Description

This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 23 May 1958, page 8: "Mr. Black-out" prepares to plunge the city into darkness, the water heaters into coolers and the public into gloom -- unless … Here at the City Council sub-station, a technician illustrated just what will happen next week when more severe cuts will be introduced unless there is an immediate response to the electricity department's appeal for greater voluntary savings in the use of electric power. The reduced consumption has been ordered by the State Hydro-Electric Department, and local bodies have no option but to comply. Whether or not "Mr. Black-out" goes into action will depend on the individual efforts of citizens."
