The Floral Festival was a weeklong series of events organised by the Palmerston North Public Relations Organisation between the 17th and 22nd of February 1958. The events were well attended, and many businesses got into the spirit of the occasion with floral themed window displays, quizzes, fashion shows and film festival showings. The event was topped off by the parade, attended by hundreds of people along the route.

The Manawatu Evening Standard on 24th February 1958 decribed this entry as depicting "The Plunket Queen, Miss D. Sunley, of Palmerston North, received an overwhelming ovation as she was driven past the judges' stand during the floral procession at the Showgrounds on Saturday."

After the festival, The Manawatū Standard reported (25 February 1958) "Many people have congratulated Mr Beckett [Public Relations Officer] and his assistant Miss B. Norman, on the success of the Floral Festival which brought to the city visitors from over a wide area. With the influx of these visitors trade in the local retail stores automatically quickened in tempo, and it would appear that the festival did much for Palmerston North."

After the festival, The Manawatū Standard reported (25 February 1958) "Many people have congratulated Mr Beckett [Public Relations Officer] and his assistant Miss B. Norman, on the success of the Floral Festival which brought to the city visitors from over a wide area. With the influx of these visitors trade in the local retail stores automatically quickened in tempo, and it would appear that the festival did much for Palmerston North."

This image depicts the Youth for Christ float fronted by a large scarlet cross. Massed hydrangeas provided a colourful spectacle and a youthful band played suitable music through the medium of piano accordions. This entry was awarded first prize for the natural blossom section.

The Manawatu Evening Standard on 24th February 1958 described this entry as 'showing originality', depicting "...an iceberg on which stood the personification of Sir Edmund Hilary in Polar garb accompanied by a live husky at his feet. Appropriately, and firmly placed in the iceberg proudly waved the New Zealand flag. This entry gained second prize in the trade section for Glaxo Laboratories Ltd."

The Manawatu Evening Standard on 24th February 1958 described this entry as being "...one of the daintiest floats which took part in the floral procession ... submitted by Regent Motors. The basic shape was give by a motor-car. The entire body was smothered in pink and white artificial blossoms and on the roof rode a miniature passenger who was dressed to match her conveyance. This entry was awarded second place in the artificial blossom section."

This image depicts a mock haka party on a float created by the Manawatū Savage Club. Mockery of kapa haka was once considered 'just a bit of fun' and was often conducted during public events. The practice slowly died out across Aotearoa in the face of protest and education about manifestations of institutional racism, particularly after the 1979 'Haka Party Incident' at Auckland University. The Manawatū Savage Club was established in 1908, and changed its name to OnStage Manawatū in 2020.

The Floral Festival was a weeklong series of events organised by the Palmerston North Public Relations Organisation between the 17th and 22nd of February 1958. The events were well attended, and many businesses got into the spirit of the occasion with floral themed window displays, quizzes, fashion shows and film festival showings. The event was topped off by the parade, attended by hundreds of people along the route.

This entry to the floral procession from the Palmerston North Milk Treatment Station promotes homogenised milk and was placed first in the Trade section. The float was built on a trailer and towed by a red tractor. It featured a gigantic milk bottle leaning over a piano with some young men and women, who were surrounded by standard sized bottles of milk. The base is decorated with hydrangeas.

The Manawatu Evening Standard on 24th February 1958 described this entry as being "...the work of the combined retail stores in the city and well deserved its placing of first in its section. The float, which was made in two pieces, showed a perfectly outlined swan drawing a bevy of beautiful girls, who were surrounded by white and blue blossoms. Completely decorated in artificial blossoms, this float was the result of much painstaking work by three who designed and built it."
