Palmerston North Settlers' Collection

Palmerston North Settlers' Collection

A resource created by Palmerston North Branch NZ Society of Genealogists ++What is the Palmerston North Settlers Collection?

++ It consists of files of documents, photographs and stories contributed by families about their relatives who lived in or near Palmerston North. It was accumulated over a 30 year period, and collated by Noeline Penny for the Palmerston North Branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists. The collection also aims to list all published information about these families, including booklets, newspaper articles etc.

What is the scope of this collection? Initially it was intended to include families living in Palmerston North and its immediate farming environs, in the period 1875-1900. However, contributions have been received for some families further afield in the Manawatū, and some for more recent times.

Memory Lane - "Star pianist a sell-out draw"

Memory Lane - "Star pianist a sell-out draw"

Journalist Tina White's weekly "Memory Lane" article in the Manawatū Standard. In 1955 pianist Winifred Atwell performed a six day show season at the Regent. The variety show featured comedians, artists and even some nudity. Pianist Winifred (Winnie) Atwell was the star attraction. She was very popular in Australia and New Zealand through the 1950s and 1960s and she toured both countries often. Her records sold well and her mixture of fun and classical expertise was irresistible.

Christmas lights on Rangitikei Street

A nocturnal view from Te Marae o Hine, The Square, looking down Rangitikei Street, showing the illuminated Christmas decorations. In 1970, to mark Palmerston North's centennial, the Council arranged to purchase a section of the 1969 Light of London Christmas decorations from Regent Street. Ten lines of lights were purchased at a cost of £2,820 - 9 lines consisting of 1 large centre star, 2 reflector stars and 4 triple drapes. The 10th line was a shield based on the Palmerston North coat of arms. The lines were placed on Broadway Avenue, Rangitikei Street and in The Square. The coat of arms was in Fitzherbert Avenue. It cost $3000 per year to power the lights. They were taken down in March of 1972 for refurbishing and put up for Christmas in 1972-1974.
