Machinists at Libertyland Factory

Three women sit behind sewing machines at the Libertyland Factory in Palmerston North. R W H Symington and Co. (N Z) Ltd first established themselves in New Zealand in 1934. Specialising in corsetry and underwear manufacturing, a small factory was built in Palmerston North in 1937, and the main "Libertyland " factory was completed and opened in 1946. The company was acquired by Courtalds Pty (UK) in 1965 and then in 1990 became a wholly owed subsidy of Lane Walker Rudkin (LWR) lndustries Ltd, New Zealand’s largest textile garment company. Libertyland closed to business in July 2009, and was demolished in 2012.

The words running across the side of the bus read, "Don't Take LSD, Take a City Bus for Your Next Trip. It's Safer". 92 floats took part at the Palmerston North City Centennial celebrations of 1971. Approx. 10,000 people were present at the event to celebrate 100 years of Palmerston North.

The King Edward VII Memorial Fountain

The centre of this image is the King Edward VII Memorial Fountain, with people sit in the benches that surround it. The photograph shows it in on its second site, in the middle of the pond near the Coleman Mall corner of The Square. The fountain was originally located where the War Memorial stands now - it was moved in 1927 to allow that monument to be constructed. It remained here until it was again relocated close to the corner of The Square and Broadway in 2005.

The Sir Geoffrey Peren Building (named for the first principal of Massey Agricultural College, previously known as the Old Main Building) was designed by Roy A. Lippincott in the Spanish Mission / Mission Revival style. It was built by Fletcher Construction, with its foundation stone laid in 1929 and opening in 1931. As the main building of Massey Agricultural College it housed lecture rooms, teaching and research laboratories, a library, assembly hall, students' common room and staff studies. It is now used for offices, teaching and research.
