Huia Mackrell served in the New Zealand army during WWI. He is shown 3rd from right, back row. Handwritten names identify others in the photograph but the writing is unclear. It may include "Ledger", "Father Plater", "Burns", "Parsons" and "Scully Souchon". The image was used as a postcard.

John Mackrell (c. 1861 - 1897) is the husband of Annie Elenor Heslop, and the father of Huia Heslop Mackrell. He died 18 June 1895 at 35 years of age. The gravesite is in Taradale
