Memory Lane - "Wig-wag clangs through the dead of night"

In 1927, the Railways Department installed an American designed rail crossing called a wig-wag on Main Street, opposite Millar Street. Whilst the loud bells prevented accidents, late trains caused disturbance for residents, and even more so when it was defective and continued to ring throughout the night. The problem was fixed, however the wig-wag was dismantled by 1945.

The rail tracks in Main Street were removed in 1964 and there is now no trace of the old level crossing in Terrace End.
