The railway station and yards were in Main Street from 1890 to 1964, when all services finally moved to the Tremaine Avenue site on the edge of Palmerston North. Much of this land is now called 'the Railway Land" and is maintained as a recreational space.

Plan is a copy of the original railways plan 13984, drawn to a scale of 1 chain: 1 inch. Amended 1948 and 1953.

The ladies restrooms in The Square are of an art deco design, and have served as public toilets for women since 1936. They now have an addition at the rear of the building that contains men's toilets and the I-site information centre, but the frontage remains as originally designed.

Plan for what became the Coronation Fountain in The Square. It was built in 1902 and was moved from the centre of the Square to opposite what is now the City Library in 1926, and then to near the corner of Broadway and The Square in 2005.

The fountain has plaques that commemorate three events; it was erected to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII in August 1902 and also commemorates the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Borough of Palmerston North, and the reaching of city status in 1930.

Plan for the re-erection of the Coronation Fountain

The Coronation Fountain was first constructed near the centre of The Square in 1902. It was moved in 1926 to accommodate the new war memorial that commemorated those who fell in WWI.

The fountain sat in its new position in The Square, opposite what is now the City Library, until it was again moved to its present location near the corner of Broadway and The Square in 2005.
