This photograph shows the students at Himatangi Mill School, which opened in September 1903.

Front row sitting from left: Unknown, Arnold Mardon, unknown, Jack Mardon, Wilkie Mardon.

Wilkie Mardon died at the age of 22 during World War I and is buried at Port Said, Egypt.

Municipal Buildings, The Square

The Municipal Offices illuminated for the Coronation of George VI in 1937. The administration building of the Palmerston North City Council was built as a bank in 1892 and acquired by the the Palmerston North Borough Council in 1900. The building was demolished in to make way for new Municpal offices, constructed in 1945.

The 9th Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles was one of three squadrons of the Wellington Mounted Rifles Regiment. The formed in 1914 and served in World War One.

Taken from the railway line that ran down the centre of Main Street, this photograph shows the 'new' (1905) Palmerston North Post Office with clock tower, and the old Post Office, moved back to sit behind the new building on Main Street. The vehicles outside the "Licensed Victuallers Association" office are awaiting separate orders before starting out.

Train in the Square

A train is running through The Square while people sit on seats alongside. At this time The Square was divided into 5 areas. The central strip contained the train lines, gardens, and a Band Rotunda and the King Edward VII Coronation monument (now Coronation Fountain), built in August 1902, on either side of the tracks. The building on the right is the Child's Commercial Hotel, which stayed on this site until around 1930. The band rotunda was moved to the Esplanade in 1907 and replaced with a new one.

Demonstration of a Boxing Stance by "Clarke"

This photographs shows an athlete named "Clarke" demonstrating a boxing pose. According to the newspapers of the time, a professional boxer name J Clarke, from Wonderland in England, made a tour of the New Zealand boxing scene in 1909.
