Commercial Union Assurance Building, Rangitikei Street

Looking down Cuba Street to the Commercial Union Building on the corner of King and Rangitikei Streets. The eight-storey building was built in 1973 for $1,000,000 on the site of the old Hotel Imperial, by Commercial Union, an insurance business in New Zealand since 1890. It was officially opened 20 November 1973 by Joe Walding, Minister for Overseas Trade and Member of Parliament for Palmerston North. Originally, the ground level had six shops and a service desk for Commercial Union, floors 1-5 were occupied by the motor registration department of the Post Office (for the whole country), floors 6-7 were occupied by Commercial Union and the top floor housed a staff cafeteria. The building is currently used as student flats and hosts office space (2015). Published in the Manawatu Standard 31 July 1975.

Peace Celebrations 21 Gun Salute, Palmerston North Show Grounds

Peace celebrations were held 19 - 21 July in Palmerston North. On Saturday 19 July at 9.30 am a 21 Gun Salute under the direction of Col. McDonald was executed. Later, speeches were given at the Show Grounds. Also see 2014N_A109_009508 and Ian Matheson City Archives, PNCC 1/17/2 Box 1.

Fitzherbert Park was developed out of part of Borough reserve land, in the block cornered by park Road and Fitzherbert Avenue. The grandstand in the background was demolished in 1936 and the present grandstand constructed in 1937.

Mr. R. S. Abraham

Richard Slingsby Abraham (c 1852-1942) was a founder of the stock and station agency known as Abraham and Williams Limited. In 1876, when manager of the Bulls branch of the Bank of New Zealand, Mr Abraham acquired an interest in the firm of Stevens and Gorton, stock and station agents, but in 1883 the partnership Abraham was a well known resident of Palmerston North for many years, erecting a two-storey wooden house on the site of the Massey University campus, called 'Tiritea'.

Tunnel - Mangahao Electric Power Scheme

This photograph shows the inside of a tunnel created for the Mangahao Line, complete with tracks and a cart for carting rubble.The Mangahao Power Station provides hydroelectric power and is situated near the town of Shannon. It serves Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. After being delayed by WWI, construction began in late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924.

'Tiritea', residence of R S Abraham, Fitzherbert

“Tiritea” was constructed in 1903 and later removed in two parts to make way for the first Science building of Massey Agricultural College in 1929. The two halves were moved to the rear of the property, one becoming the administration block, while the other was the residence of G Peren, Principal of the college. Mr. Abraham founded Abraham and Williams, stock agents, in 1876. Mr. Abraham was a founding member of both the Manawatu Golf Club and the West Coast Live Stock Auctioneers’ Association.

The trophy on display is entitled Child's Cricket Shield. The Manawatu Times, 26 April 1910 states that Terrace End school won the Child's Cricket Shield in 1910, so it is presumed this is them.
