Commeration stone, Manawatu Gorge

The inscription states, “This stone was erected to commemorate the widening of this road. Work was commenced in April 1921, and completed April 1926”. The official ceremony was performed by the Prime Minister, Right Honourable J.C. Coates, P.C. The Gorge Board of Control was made up of members of Palmerston North, Pahiatua, Woodville and Feilding Borough Councils and Kairanga, Dannevirke, Waipawa, Pahiatua, Woodville, Oroua, and Rangitikei County Councils. The stone is located at the western end of the Gorge.

Queen Carnival, Foxton

Queen carnivals were a popular way to raise money for patriotic purposes during the First World War. They might incorporate a talent quest, sports contest or concert, and women competed to raise the most money for the cause. The winner was crowned queen. Here, the Foxton Queen Carnival procession proceeds up Main Street. On the left is the Presbyterian Church.

Municipal Opera House, Church Street

The Municipal Opera House of Palmerston North, designed by F J Wilson and built by J Trevor and Sons, was erected in 1904-1905 and opened 12 July 1905. In 1952 it was condemned unsafe by the Palmerston North City Council and was strengthened and remodelled both inside and out in 1955. It was sold by the PNCC to a businessman in 1996 and demolished.

Lower Turitea Dam

Th Lower Turitea Dam was originally completed in 1907 but was raised to 50 feet in 1912. It was officially opened February 17 1913. This enlarged dam remained in use until 1957 when a 100 ft high dam was constructed. The spillway is on the left.

Old Enright House and Pohangina Post Office

Jim and Tom Enright are standing in front of the house their grandfather Michael Enright built in 1896, 1 year after he and his father took possession of the 227 acres. The royal mail stables were eventually added on the left of the house and Michael (then postmaster) used the room on the right as the Post Office. The mail then had to be taken to Raumai first on horseback, later by horse and dray as roads improved. The Totara and Rimu cottage was home for Michael's sons and grandsons until the 1930s.

Richard Blythe with Copper Structure at Palmerston North Girls' High School

Mr Richard Blythe, a pharmacist who went to night school to learn enameling, completed this copper sculpture for the Palmerston North Girls' High School Library. He was commissioned by the Old Girls Association to design and make work for the Library after the School Jubilee in 1977. The sculpture depicts four knights in the age of chivalry and is a tribute to a former principal, Miss E E Stephens, who established the School Library. Miss Stephens died in 1977. Monrad family and home, Karere

The house was one of the first European houses in inland Manawatu, erected 1867 by European carpenters employed by Ditlev Gothard Monrad, the Lutheran Bishop and ex-Premier of Denmark who settled at Karere in 1866. The house was occupied by the Bishop and his wife 1867 - 1868 and then by one of the Bishop's sons, Viggo, 1868 - 1885. A verandah and extra ground-floor rooms were added to the house about 1880. The last owners and occupants were two of Viggo Monrad's sons, Ditlev and Oscar, who lived in the house from about 1886 until its destruction by fire in 1889. The house was situated near the bank of the Karere Lagoon on Section 35 of the Karere Block, about three miles west of the present settlement of Longburn, near Palmerston North. This store was a Co-op Bakery in the 1980s. At 2015, it was a Foursquare. The "Foodstore" is still visible on the front of the building.

This photograph shows a pile driver in use during the construction of the second Fitzherbert Bridge. This bridge was in use until 1986 when the third Fitzherbert Bridge, still in use today, was constructed due to increasing traffic constraints. It spans the Manawatu River.

C M Ross float, George Street

The C M Ross department store horse-drawn float stands outside the shop's entrance on George Street (near the corner of Coleman Mall). Rosscos, as it became known, became one of the foremost department stores in Palmerston North. It operated from 1883 - 1959, when the business was sold to Milne and Choyce.

This photograph of is part of a collection of photographs of the Mangahao Electric Power Scheme and its construction. The Mangahao Power Station provides hydroelectric power and is situated near the town of Shannon. It serves Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. After being delayed by WWI, construction began in late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924.
