Mr & Mrs Carl Emil Jorgensen

Mr & Mrs Carl Emil Jorgensen

Scandinavian settlers of Palmerston North. Researcher Val Burr notes: Arrived on ship "England" 1871 from Denmark. Took over Lot 13 of Stoney Creek Scandinavian Block. Carl found work in Southern Hawkes Bay on a sheep station. Ida, his wife, became the first teacher at Dannevirke School. She was multilingual and the only known English speaking woman of early Scandinavian immigrants. They returned to Palmerston North c. 1876 (to Stoney Creek), but sold up to open a shop in Main Street and later The Square, selling toys, etc. They went bankrupt in 1883 and later that year went to live in Dannevirke. Possibly they then emigrated elsewhere. Carl was a prominent housebuilder in the area.
