Stephen Hartley

Stephen Charles Hartley was one of the early settlers on the banks of the Manawatu River, who came to the district around 1846. Mr Hartley went into business as a trader and rope-maker at Pohuetangi, on the south bank of the river about a mile downstream from the Shannon Bridge and was a well-known resident of the locality for about thirty years. He then moved near Foxton and subsequently settled in Palmerston North, where he was in business as a Maori Interpreter from about 1878 to 1897, the year of his death. Mr Hartley is chiefly remembered as being the first European to visit Papaiōea, probably during the late 1840's or early 1850's, through the visit was probably of no historical consequence.
