The original photograph has “breaking in the land at Aorangi” written on the back. The plough in use is a heavy swamp plough, with a chain attached to the shear. The chain assisted in turning the rushes under the sod. The man on the far left is thought to be a member of the Jefferies family of the Aoranagi – Taonui area.
