Scandinavian Coffee Stall, World War One

Scandinavian Coffee Stall, World War One

The Scandinavian Club held a stall in March 1915 in order to raise funds for the Belgian Relief Fund (see 2007n_scand2_gro_1135). It is unclear if this is a different occasion - however, the setting and costumes are different in the two photographs. Newspapers of the time explain that the women wore national dress and made the coffee from a traditional Scandinavian recipe known as 'egg coffee' - named for the egg whites that were mixed in to remove the bitterness of the coffee. The Scandinavian Club which ran in Palmerston North was formed in August 1914 and ran until 1917.
