The Square looking west from Post Office Clock Tower

This photograph is taken from the Post Office Clock Tower and looks west across the Square to Coleman Place (now Coleman Mall). [1] The Bon Marche Store owned by CM Ross (on the present City Library Site). The Tea Rooms were opened in 1905 in the building that was originally G M Snelson's Peoples Mart. [2] The Bank of Australasia, which was rebuilt after fire on 16 September 1910. It first opened on this site in 1881 as the Union Bank of Australasia. [3] Broad Street (now Broadway Avenue) - The Nonpareil Cycle Shop owned by Eric and Charles Pees was opened in Palmerston North November 1905. The store was originally owned by the J B Clarkson Company. [4] Arthur Hopwood's Ironmongers occupied the site formerly know as the Theatre Royal. Hopwood's was there until 22 February 1924 when fire destroyed most of the buildings on this block. [5] O'Connor and Tydeman Watchmakers took over part of the old Central Hotel Building in about 1910. It was a new building, identified by its upper storey having 6 windows. [6] From left: Arthur E Clausen (Crockery Importers), Garner and Garner (Drapers), J Rawlins (Dining Rooms), Miss E Rawlins, (Music Teacher), Edwards and Sons Ltd (Hardware Merchants), Andrew Millar (Stationer and Bookseller), J H Dalton (Clothing Company) and W H Halley. (See Wises Directory 1912, p 788). [7] The Clarendon Hotel, which was rebuilt after fire in 1904, is the three storey building on the right hand corner of the photograph. The gun on the far-right foreground was placed in the Square in 1909.
