The photograph was taken 15 or chains south-west of Opawe Road, about one mile up from the junction with Pohangina Valley East Road. The men received 4/6 per sleeper, delivered at Ashhurst. The sleepers were cut from Crown Land (part of the Totara Reserve), in bush which had been partly damaged by fire two years prior.
