The lakelet was constructed in The Square, Palmerston North, in 1909 by the Beautifying Society. In 1953 Arthur Hopwood gifted the city of Palmerston North £10,000 to build a new tower in The Square to hold the clock and chimes removed from the Post Office after the 1942 earthquake. A cross was first erected on the top of the Clock Tower in 1960. Both the lakelet and Clock Tower were last refurbished as part of the 'City Heart' project about 2007.

The subject of this paper is the four-company organization recently adopted for the infantry of the Regular Army, and which will shortly be also adopted for the Territorial Force.

Originally this article was given as a lecture to the London Units of the Territorial Force, by Brevet-Major Hereward Wake, King's Royal Rifles.

Born, Harald Nilius Anderson in Oslo, Norway, 16 March 1869 - Harold Anderson settled in Palmerston North. He was joined by his sisters who worked with Harold at his photography and art business, Anderson Studios, in Main Street (opposite the then Railway Station). His sons later continued the business in Berrymans building on Broadway. He had ten children.

Harold travelled to the United States and attended art school in Chicago. He then visited Norway and Ireland before returning to Aotearoa.

Harold completed the drawings of Rangitāne rangatira, Te Peeti Te Awe Awe, that were sent to Italy, and on which the marble statue in Te Marae o Hine is modelled.

He died 4 April 1925 at 137 Scandia Street Palmerston North, now 429 Albert Street, although the old house is gone. Harold was buried in Terrace End Cemetery.

Bertha Sydney Burrill (c.1890-1970) aged 19.

Bertha married Mark Briggs - flax worker, conscientious objector, Palmerston North businessman and member of the Legislative Council - in 1920. They had one daughter Joan.

Mark Briggs (1885-1965) was a flax worker, conscientious objector, Palmerston North businessman and member of the Legislative Council.

He was particularly noted as being one of the fourteen New Zealand conscientious objectors who, in 1917, was transported to France during WWI. On his return to New Zealand he took up his auctioneering business in Cuba Street and led an active public life. He married Alberta (Bertha) Burrill in 1920.

This photograph was taken when he was elected to the Legislative Council in 1936, aged about 51 years.

An unpublished paper by Dr Jim Coull (Geography Department of the University of Aberdeen0 who was a sabbatical visitor to Massey University in the early 1980s.

The paper explores the settlement of the Manchester Block, an area around the Feilding region, from the 1870s. Settlement was organised by the the Colonist's and Emigrants' Aid Corporation. Chapters are included on the timber industry, settlement and development, communications and the growth of population.

This paper was intended to be part of a collection of writings to honour Professor R O Buchanan (1894-1980 but it is believed this was the only contribution completed.

A souvenir envelope produced for the Palmerston North centennial in 1971. This first day of issue envelope is franked with a special Palmerston North Centennial Pavilion postmark, and contains the centennial stamp.

An article written for the "New Zealand Camellia Bulletin" about the camellia garden at the Esplanade gardens. Gives a brief history of the gardens and in particular the development of the camellia walk.

The Victoria Esplanade was opened in 1897. it lies along the banks of the Manawatū River. Camellias were first planted to protect the Rose Garden in 1968.

A brief biography of Charles Wildbore written by Jim Lundy. He was a beekeeper, honey producer, dairy farmer and photographer. He was known for his photographs depicting everyday life in Pohangina.

A glitter ball was installed in the then De Luxe Theatre in George Street, in C. 1932. It remained in the building until its demolition in 1984. The 'De Luxe Theatre' started life as His Majesty's Theatre in 1911, and changed functions and names over the years, to: His Majesty's Skating Rink; a storage facility; an auction room; Paramount Theatre; De Luxe Skating Rink; De Luxe Dance Hall; Coconut Grove Ballroom; ANA Dance Hall; George Street Ballroom; Ballroom Astoria. It is now held by Te Manawa Mueseum, accession number 2013/71/1

Alice Coombs, the wife of William Coombs. lived in Hawkes Bay until returning to Palmerston North after her husband's death in Hastings in 1907. She died in 1940 at the age of 82. The photograph was taken prior to Nina Coombs wedding in 1925.

The guest speaker at the 1984 Lloyd Morgan Trust dinner, arranged by local Lions Clubs, was Jimmy Cater, Former President of the United States of America. It was held at the Manawatu Sports Stadium.

Lloyd Morgan was the first New Zealander to hold the position of World President of the International Association of Lions Clubs in 1979/80, and the annual dinner was a fundraising event.

In 2018 the site of Whitaunui, the World War II Military Defaulters’ Camp near Shannon, was listed as a Schedule 2 heritage site in the District Plan of the Horowhenua District Council. The three defaulters’ camps in the Shannon district were Paiaka on Springs Road, the adjacent Tyrell’s Farm and Whitaunui on the Shannon Foxton Road. Whitaunui was selected as the heritage site because of its larger size, its archaeological remains and its historical significance in the earlier flax milling industry.

This document contains the nomination form as submitted by Historic Places Manawatu-Horowhenua and a section of "Supporting Information on Proposed Plan Change 1 - Technical Assessments of Buildings , Structures and Sites" (as specific to Witaunui) as prepared by Ian Bowman and Val Burr. Historic Places Manawatu Horowhenua were extremely supportive in working over several years for the acceptance of the Whitaunui site as a historic place.

The PDC (Premier Department Company) was one of the foremost department stores in Palmerston North. It was on the corner of The Square, where the Plaza is today.

These poems were written by Zeta Hope, a former employee of the department store, about the business and the creation of the Plaza.
