The Wellington Manawatu Railway Company Limited constructed the rail line between Wellington and Palmerston, Which opened in 1886. The company ran the line until they sold it to the Government in 1908.
Also contains a sketch map of New Zealand showing the railway systems. the map contains wider information on the ownership and use of land in the area.
Topographical map showing boundaries proposed by the Palmerston North City Council (August and November 1988) and Local Government Commission (Interim Determination and Draft, December 1988. In 1989 there was New Zealand wide reform of Local Government. At the time about 850 local bodies were amalgamated into 86 local authorities, made up of regional and territorial levels.

It includes the names of many of the landowners written on the sections they held and extensive anotations detailing sections purchased for public schools and other uses. Land area is listed in each section. Scale 4 chains : 1 inch.
This map details the route taken by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh during their 1953-1954 royal tour. Descriptions of the attractions at various stops nationwide are listed on either side. Of Palmerston North: "Thursday, 7th January .... Royal Train arrives at Palmerston North for civic reception at 5.30. 8.15: Civic dinner. Stay night at Grand Hotel, Palmerston North... Friday, 8th January 10.10: Royal Train proceeds north from Palmerston North." The top reads, "To the Girls. Wishing you all the best for Xmas & New Year From Evans Family.
The Sledge Track is located at the end of Kahuterawa Road, 17 km from the Palmerston North. It was opened in 2003. GPS (Global Positioning System) readings and old survey maps guided ensure the track follows the original road to the point where it linked up with the loop tracks within Hardings Park. Ian Matheson, Palmerston North City Archivist, was greatly involved with the historical maps on the signage.
