The flags, bunting and decorations on the façade of the PDC department store were probably hung to celebrate and Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953, or for the Royal Visit of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in January 1954.
The Premier Drapery Company Ltd opened on 3 July 1915. From 1930, it traded from this three-storey building on the Church Street side of Te Marae o Hine, The Square. The store closed in 1988 and the PDC building was demolished in 1990 to allow for an expansion of The Plaza shopping centre.
