James Linton was the second Mayor of the Palmerston Borough. He was elected to office in 1879, 1880, 1881 and 1884. He was Mayor for a total of four years. Born in Scotland, Mr Linton was attracted to Australia and New Zealand by the gold rushes of the 1850s and 1860s. He came to Palmerston North in 1871 and built the first dwelling in the town at Terrace End. He went into business as an property manager but later became a land agent. He retired to Australia and died there about 1905.
