Joesph was the first Manager of the Manawatu Butter Factory in Longburn, which opened on 3 November 1884. This factory was equipped with three Nakstou centrifugal cream separators. Later it was forced into liquidation due to lack of sufficient supply and unsatisfactory equipment. He was the father of of Kate (later Mrs Williams) and Charlie.
