- Description
This shows Woodville's second fire station, in lower Ormond Street, opposite Foutaine Square. Around 1885 a committee was set up to look into the possibility of forming a Volunteer Brigade, and 32 members were enrolled as a firefighting unit with contributions of money from residents totally £75/8/0. A Fire Engine was bought from Dunedin South Brigade and later sold to Feilding for £80/0/0. The Brigade in Woodville was captained by W. Nicholson with W. Bickerston as Leiutenant. As with Palmerston North, Woodville was short of money and lacked a good water supply. The first fire station cost £21/0/0 and was built on Ormond Street wand was later turned into a Plunket Room and Dental Clinic (until 1949). The Brigade was re-formed in 1888 and again after 1892.
