“Takaro A Community Helps Itself”

This image was published in the June 25th 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper.
An excerpt from the article read: “With two major hurdles almost overcome, mothers in the Takaro-Highbury area are now challenging service clubs to do something for their own area, instead of raising funds and support for projects in other parts of New Zealand. The co-ordinator of the Farnham Avenue Community House Project, Wendy Craig told the ‘Tribune’ that the Housing Corporation and the Palmerston North Hospital Board had already got behind the project - and now it's time that service clubs did the same. "We're desperately seeking donations, she said. “We challenge all service clubs to actually present some money to their own communities for a change." On June 16 the community workers involved with the project learnt that the Minister of Housing had approved the use of a corporation home in Farnham Avenue for community services. The house has been in use since April providing a play group for children of the area, with mothers helping their own, and other mothers' children to use the facility.”
