This house and property was located about a quarter of a mile from the junction with the Main Highway at Mt Stewart. It was earlier occupied by Miss Dalrymple, a relative of Peter Stewart, an early settler in the Mt. Stewart area, then by a Mr Giesen. It was purchased by John Matthews in 1902. John Matthews, who first settled at Mt. Steward c 1874, was a son of Mr and Mrs Alfred Matthews, two of the earliest settlers of the Mt. Stewart area.
