"Palmertson North City half marathon winner Nathan Lewer (Wellington) powers away during yesterday's race. Lewer, formerly of Palmerston North, won in 1h 10m 31s."
"The race attracted 37 four-person relay teams and 916 starters."
Lewer beat former champion Kevin Campbell (2nd), Mark Lenihan (3rd) and Austin Parker (4th). Hastings' Jack Tregurtha won the walking event for the second time with a time of 1h 58m 40s, beating Stratford's Baz Preston (2nd), and Palmerston North competitors Robert Radley (3rd) and Gerald Manderson (4th). The women's walk was won by Ashhurst's Joanne Townshend (2h 14m 36s), beating Liz Holt (Napier) and Simone Bell (Palmerston North).
The main story however, centred on two-time national marathon champion Lee Ann McPhillips who ran away with the women's competition with a time of 1h 15m 2s, beating her previous personal best and nearly 13 minutes ahead of runner up Delphine Gore. Her win was credited to a change of coach - Trevor Wright. McPhillips later competed in the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Olympics, placing 5th in the Women's Marathon.
