Tom Spelman (84), pictured with his wife Phyllis Myrtle Spelman (nee Arlidge), moved to the Pohangina Valley in 1896 at the age of 5. He was one of the Valley's best known residents, known also for his knowledge of the valley. He helped his parents and brother to run a dairy factory at Awahou North, which exported butter to England as well as selling it on to the local market under the trade name "Awa Tiro". The factory opened in 1910 and closed in 1914.
