The linotype machines were used to make small blocks of type used for the newspaper, to make it easier for typesetters to put the paper together. From left: Colin Furness; Unidentified; Andrew Dick; Ian Whitson; Clive Holms; Charlie O'Brien. The Manawatu Evening Standard, launched in 1880, was the first daily newspaper in Palmerston North.
