This view of Fitzherbert Avenue shows some of the 70-80 year old trees that once lined the road. The trees were removed in the late 1990s - a move that was very controversial and garnered much debate and protests in the years leading up to their removal. The leading group of protesters was known as Avenue Action. Photograph published in Manawatu Evening Standard 17 October 1973.
