“No Palava When Student Takes Charge of ‘Palava’”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the July 30th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published with the caption “The producer also acts in the play... Adrian Ogier, with a rose clenched between his teeth, hams it up for Debbie Watkins in a scene from the 1920’s segment of ‘Palava’.”
An excerpt from the article read: “’Palava’ - of the students, by the students, and with a student in charge of the whole production. He even tells his teacher what to do – and they do it. It’s the first time that Palmerston North’s Freyberg High School has staged such a musical, in such a way. It's probably one of the first in the city with that format, says the show’s director, seventh form student Adrian Ogier.
‘Palava’, featuring extracts from musicals and musical styles of the last 100 years, opened at the Little Theatre in Main St, on Thursday night. It is being staged until Wednesday with the two-hour performance beginning at 7.30pm.
…
“Palava" consists of six acts, each really a separate play, and progressing from Victorian Music Hall through to the "Tango Affair” of the 20's, the great musicals of the 1940’s, rock and roll, and the protest scene of the 60's. All these are capped off with a “futuristic finale" of what music shows might be like in the future.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
