Ian Colquhoun began playing cricket at Rongotai College of Wellington, and while there captained the Wellington Brabin Shield side before going to Otago University in Dunedin, where he became a member of the NZ University cricket side. After finishing university, Colquhoun returned to Manawatu, captaining the Central Districts to Plunket Shield victory and was selected for the New Zealand Team. He became a Central Districts selector, but later relinquished this post, being re-appointed in 1973. He has also played rugby for Wellington and Otago, and has captained the local provincial side. His success with the first XV of Palmerston North Boys' High School brought him acclaim as a rugby coach and he lectured on this subject in the UK, South Africa and Australia.
