Foxton Centennial re-enactment
- Description
Men, women and children dress up for a re-enactment to commemorate the landing of pioneers on the banks of the Manawatu River. Mr Neil Hunt, black beard, portrays the first Presbyterian minister, The Reverend James Duncan. The original landing occurred because of the disaster of 1855, when an earthquake badly damaged the settlement of Paiaka. Consequently, the Anglican Community moved down river to Foxton or Te Awahou as it was called then. Foxton is located on the lower west coast of the North Island, in the Horowhenua District.
