Description

Before the bridge at the eastern end of the Manawatu Gorge was completed in 1875, coach passengers had to complete their journey by aerial cage. This cage was suspended seventy feet above the river by a wire rope. Passengers would then continue their journey in another coach waiting for them on the other side. This is a stereoscopic image.
