The first Fitzherbert Bridge was constructed in 1877, although the road on the Fitzherbert side of the river was not formed until early in 1878. The photograph looks eastwards towards Fitzherbert. Mr A H Ihle, bridge contractor, is standing in the centre of the bridge.
