“Rowling… N.Z. Becoming A Police State”
- Description
-
This image was published in the November 5th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper with the caption: “Mr Rowling and his wife arriving in Palmerston North last week to open Labour’s election campaign.”
An excerpt from the article read: “New Zealand’s leadership is now assuming all the hallmarks of a totalitarian regime, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bill Rowling, told the ‘Tribune’ in Palmerston North last week. The newspaper’s editor had asked the Labour Party’s leader for his opinion of a statement by the Member for Hamilton West, Mr. Minogue. The MP claimed earlier in the week that successive legislation is leading New Zealand into the situation of a ‘police state’. Mr Rowling agreed with Mr Minogue’s contention – but said all the MP was doing was ‘going the rounds of the cocktail circuit beating his gums about this’.”
