“New (Piece Of) Air Terminal Takes Shape”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the October 15th, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published.
The short article read: “Some of Milson airport's new passenger terminal is now in an advanced state of construction. But when the rest is built is not quite certain. Construction of the new piece of terminal began about three months ago. The new building is sited to one side of the existing terminal, and when completed will open into the present terminal.
Ultimate plans call for the present terminal to be removed eventually, and replaced with a two-storey structure. But it's not known if, or when, this will happen as the Palmerston North City Council has yet to decide on the plan, according to the city's engineer, Mr G. W. N. Johansen.
The building now under construction (stage one) should be completed in the New Year, and is estimated to cost about $220,000. The single-story structure will consist of a new kitchen and restaurant facilities, as well as storage for caterers and public toilets.
The kitchen and cafeteria facilities in the existing building will be removed on completion of stage one, Mr Johansen said, making more space for the public. The present air terminal is now too small for the demands placed on it. He added that there will not be a physical division between the new and existing buildings, so that the lounge facilities will also be partially included in the new building”
