“Go Fly a Kite”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the September 3rd 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published with the caption: “All set for takeoff- Daryl Hind (12) prepares his kite for another flight, assisted by Tina George (11) and Helen Reynolds (14).”
The short article read: “As the August holidays neared their end, many mothers were no doubt wishing that their children would ‘go fly a kite’ and stop annoying them. These Pahiatua children did just that - thanks to St Paul's Union Church and Family Centre. About 20 children, aged between 9 and 12 years, were entertained by a wide variety of activities at the church and family centre in the last week of the holidays. It was the first time the church had organised such a programme, and children were encouraged to take part in kite-making (and flying, later), macrame, cane work, string work, ‘pet rock’ making, Scottish country dancing, and a bus trip. The holiday programme will probably become an annual event, because of the success of the August holiday sessions.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
