The clock tower in The Square was built in 1957, after a donation by local businessman, Arthur Hopwood. This stairway was part of the original design, and led to the sound shell that was attached at the front. It was removed in the 1990s. The photograph was taken by Alf and Merlyn Drew, to test equipment for their business, Photo Instruments Limited which operated at 55 Princess Street from 1959-1989.
