Charles John Monro, born 1851, was the son of Dr David Monro, a pioneer settler of Nelson, who became the New Zealand Parliament's second speaker 1861 - 1970. Charles married Miss Helena Beatrice MacDonald in 1885 and three years later they came to the Manawatu District. They built a home in Fitzherbert West, called 'Craiglockhart', where they raised their family. The house and land is now owned by Massey University.
