Richard Sadler Smith was born in England on 15 February 1846 and married Jessie Philbrick. The couple had five children: Jessie Emma, Richard Valentine Philbrick, Sydney William, Charlotte May and Samual Hooper Smith. After the family migrated to New Zealand, Smith bought a property at Fitzherbert East in July 1885 which he farmed until 1903. The family's homestead was called "Wairakau." The couple subsequently moved to Havelock North.
