“Procesh In Lion’s Den”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the April 9th 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption “Students and public listen to the speeches in the Lion's Den.”
The short article read: “Another orgy of mayhem burst on Palmerston North on Thursday- Procesh, that Massey capping celebration, had hit town again. While the 27 floats entertained lunch-time shoppers, other Palmerstonians were being surprised by students' capping pranks - some intrepid students climbed to the top of the Civic Centre crane and hung an effigy from it in the middle of the night. Other students swiped road signs, rearranged a roundabout's concrete blocks, erected detour signs on the roadway near Massey, and got up to other pranks. Procesh appeared to be well-controlled. However someone pitched a cement bag full of water from the new Post Office building in Main Street, just missing a traffic officer. After the Procesh ended its trek through the city's streets, about 2,000 students and members of the public gathered for more foolery in the Lion's Den, opposite the Post Office, for speeches by Lord and Lady Massey.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
