Mr Gaius Brewer was born in Abingdon, Berkshire, and arrived in Wellington, New Zealand on the ship "Wairoa" in 1877. He established his Seed and Fruit business in 1884 in Ashhurst. He had a residence on the property and a vegetable garden on the Feilding Road. Mr Brewer had the latest in seed cleaning machinery and conducted a large business in the cleaning of grass seeds for farmers of the district to the best possible quality. See The Cyclopedia of New Zealand, Vol 1, Wellington 1897, p 1207-1208. Gaius Brewer appears in the Wises 1902 Directory on page 22, another listing on page 1108 shows him linked with B & Bauckman, Seed Merchants. 1900 and 1914 editions of Wises make no mention of Gaius Brewer, however the name Bauckman is linked to a carrier business.
