Bishop Ditlev Gothard Monrad, his wife, and sons Viggo and Johannes and families came to the Palmerston North area from Denmark in October of 1866 and settled at Karere, 3 miles from Longburn. The Bishop was the Premier of Denmark during the war with Bismark’s Germany, 1864, but left after finding himself the scapegoat of the Government for Denmark’s defeat. Bishop Monrad returned to Denmark in 1869 and Viggo and his family continued on the farm.
