The inscription states, “This stone was erected to commemorate the widening of this road. Work was commenced in April 1921, and completed April 1926”. The official ceremony was performed by the Prime Minister, Right Honourable J.C. Coates, P.C. The Gorge Board of Control was made up of members of Palmerston North, Pahiatua, Woodville and Feilding Borough Councils and Kairanga, Dannevirke, Waipawa, Pahiatua, Woodville, Oroua, and Rangitikei County Councils. The stone is located at the western end of the Gorge.
