Journalist Tina White's weekly "Memory Lane" article in the Manawatū Standard. Book review of "Early Medical Practitioners in Manawatū and Palmerston North" by Dr Richard Rawstron. The book describes a background of early medical services in Manawatū and Palmerston North through a collection of 26 biographies.
Some of the early practitioners were unqualified. Dr John Maitland Best settled in Foxton in 1845 and was the first doctor in the region. Dr Henry Howell Spratt was the first qualified medical practitioner in Palmerston North, 1871-1872.
