- Description
Palmerston North experienced a period of severe water shortage in the summer of 1943-1944, when the level of the lake a Turitea fell 3.5m below the bywash of the dam. This photograph is similiar to an image published in the Manawatu Times on 29 February 1944, accompanied by the caption: "CITY'S DIMINISHING WATER SUPPLY - This photograph is a panorama of the top portion of the reservoir at Tiritea showing tons of silt and mud accumulated over the last six or seven years and displacing much-needed water. Around the corner of the stream on the right of the picture is as much mud again, but of greater depth. This siltation has been exposed by the fall in the water level of the dam, which yesterday was over 10ft. below the spillway."
