An unpublished paper by Dr Jim Coull (Geography Department of the University of Aberdeen0 who was a sabbatical visitor to Massey University in the early 1980s.

The paper explores the settlement of the Manchester Block, an area around the Feilding region, from the 1870s. Settlement was organised by the the Colonist's and Emigrants' Aid Corporation. Chapters are included on the timber industry, settlement and development, communications and the growth of population.

This paper was intended to be part of a collection of writings to honour Professor R O Buchanan (1894-1980 but it is believed this was the only contribution completed.
